a novel by George Eppley

Life comes to the Archbishop by George Eppley; 6 CD setHere is a synopsis of Life Comes to the Archbishop:

Toni, a 16-year-old girl whose drug-addicted parents are arrested for armed robbery, finds temporary refuge in the home of recently retired Archbishop Foley, whose housekeeper is the girl’s grandmother. The two strike up a friendship that bridges their difference in age and their views of the Catholic Church. Exceptionally intelligent and curious, Toni welcomes her association with Kate, a college professor she meets through Foley. Kate and Tom, a 37-year-old priest, plan to marry, and they have come to Foley for advice.

When the archbishop chosen to replace Foley dies unexpectedly after only a few months on the job, T. Patrick Graham, a Vatican insider, is named archbishop. While living in Rome, Graham developed a relationship with a French diplomat. Suspicious that the relationship is more than just friendship, Graham’s Roman chauffeur follows him to the U.S. and threatens to blackmail him. The plot ends with an attempted murder resulting in an unintended death.

The narrator is Archbishop Foley, whose friendship with Toni causes him to reflect on his own life and realize how much he has been co-opted by the clerical system. The young girl’s questions bring new life and energy to this lonely old man.
